#17 Oklahoma state shocks #3 Missouri
2008-10-11
Missouri has a recent history of not dealing well with success. QB Chase Daniel undermined his chances of a Heisman Trophy bid by throwing three 2nd half interceptions as #17 Oklahoma State upset the Tigers 28-23 at home. The loss dropped Missouri’s record to 3-3 all time when ranked in the top 3 in the country and 1-2 in the past three seasons. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, improved to 6-0 which matched the 2nd best start in program history.
While the Tigers’ offensive output was impressive—454 yards including 390 passing—they were done in by mistakes, turnovers and a lack of timely play like their 2-9 mark on third down conversions. Despite gaining a lot of yards between the 20’s, Missouri couldn’t convert it to points on the scoreboard.
On the other side of the ball, OSU QB Zac Robinson threw for 2 TDs, ran for another and minimized his mistakes en route to a 215 yard day on 19/28 passing with one interception. Oklahoma State defeated a top ten team for the first time since they defeated #4 Oklahoma in 2001. Aiding their cause was a vastly superior rushing game, led by Kendall Hunter who ran for 154 yards on 24 carries, including a 68 yard TD run. The team overall held a 187-64 rushing yardage edge on Missouri.
Depending on how you look at it, Missouri either goes from the “frying pan into the fire” or immediately has a chance for some redemption as they travel to Austin to play #1 Texas next weekend. That’ll be followed by a home game against Colorado and a away contest at Baylor. Oklahoma State will also get a shot at Texas in Austin on 10/25. This upcoming Saturday they’ll entertain Baylor and on 11/1 will host Iowa State.
