Steelers' receiver busted for blowing blunts

Pacman Jones may soon have some company in the NFL “doghouse” in the personage of Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes.  He’s the latest to forget that he’s an athlete and not a “gangsta thug”, as he’s been charged on misdemeanor marijuana possession.  Despite having his own rap sheet since entering the NFL, it’s unlikely that much will come from this minor charge which will almost certainly yield only probation.

Ironically, it was Holmes’ “gangsta” posing that got him in this trouble to begin with.  He was rolling in a black, highly modified Cadillac Escalade with tinted windows, expensive “rims” and out-of-state plates in a bad part of town when pulled over by police.  Seems that Holmes’ ride matched the description of another “vehicle of interest” suspected of carrying a large quantity of drugs.  Like any good “thug”, Holmes didn’t have any ID on him but he *did* have a small quantity of marijuana filled “blunts” on him.  He’d apparently been smoking in his SUV, since it reeked of pot smoke.

Holmes played the “rehab” card earlier in his NFL career, when he escaped punishment from the team in the league after a domestic violence rap.  Charges were dropped when his “baby’s mama” declined to press charges and he got a pass professionally after agreeing to “anger management” treatment.  The treatment apparently didn’t “take”, as Holmes was arrested again after becoming “verbally abusive” to a police officer in Miami after being told to “get out of the street” that he was crossing illegally.  These charges were eventually dropped.  Perhaps mellowed by his newfound enthusiasm for marijuana, Holmes was highly cooperative with police after his most recent incident.  He admitted to possessing the pot and even pointed out the “blunts” to the officer.

Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin is at least taking some action, holding his reprobate receiver out of practice on Friday and deactivating him for Sunday’s game against:

"His situation has created somewhat of a distraction and we want to minimize that as much as we can and remain focused"
