#5 USC puts another nail in Charlie Weis’ Coffin with 38-3 win over Notre Dame
#5 USC puts another nail in Charlie Weis’ Coffin with 38-3 win over Notre Dame

2008-11-30 | Jim Murphy

If you’re going to beat USC, you’ve got to catch them early in the season. With the victory, Pete Carroll improved his record in November to 27-0 since taking over the Trojan program. The win also represented the Trojans seventh straight over the Irish, which is their longest run of futility against any opponent since they lost eight straight to Michigan State from 1955 to 1963. Charlie Weis, on the other hand, lost his eighth straight and tenth of last 11 against a top 25 team. The Irish have lost a total of 15 games in the past two years—the worst two year stretch in Notre Dame football history.

Chris Duhon sets assist mark as Knicks beat Golden State

2008-11-30 | Jim Murphy

Having a field day against the Warriors was Chris Duhon, who shredded their defense for a franchise record 22 assists to go along with 12 points. Duhon broke a record that had stood since 1958 when Ritchie Guerin had 21 assists against the St. Louis Hawks. David Lee added a career high 37 points and 21 rebounds. Newly acquired Al Harington added 36 points and 12 boards for New York. Overall, the Knicks put up 82 first half points, including 43 in the second quarter—both marks are Madison Square Garden records.

Denver, Billups prevail over hapless Twolves in Minnesota

2008-11-30 | Jim Murphy

Minnesota started reasonably well, and even led by 6 after the first quarter at 31-25. Things went downhill in a hurry for Minnesota from that point, as Denver would outscore them in the second and third quarters by a 62-39 margin to make the outcome a foregone conclusion before the midway point of the second half. The third quarter, with Billups keying a 14-0 run en route to a 27-16 frame, was by his estimation the team’s best since he became a Nugget.

2008-11-29 | Jim Murphy

After a closely contested first half, the Hornets managed to take a four point lead early in the second half on baskets by Peja Stojakovic and James Posey. It was all downhill from there, as Portland went on a 17-0 run in the third quarter to put the game on ice. The Blazers would stretch their lead to 17 points late in the game before settling for the final 15 point margin of victory. Stojakovic led the Hornets with 21 points, while Chris Paul added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Deron Williams sparks Utah to another easy win

2008-11-29 | Jim Murphy

Williams had 13 points and 15 assists in 27 minutes of play. He got to rest for the entire fourth quarter after the Jazz shellacked the Kings 44-17 in the third quarter. The 44 point outburst was the most in one quarter by a Utah team since they scored 46 against the same Kings in 1992, when John Stockton and Karl Malone still roamed the hardwood of the arena then known as the Delta Center. To put things into more perspective, in 1992 the Jazz were only one year removed from playing their home games at the old Salt Palace arena.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter, with Fresno’s Damion Owens scoring on a 68 yard interception return to put his team up 7-0. Broncos QB Kellen Moore quickly recovered, and tied the game three minutes later on a 9 yard TD pass to Jeremy Childs. The second quarter was even less eventful, with two Boise FGs by Kyle Brotzman to one by Fresno’s Kevin Goessling giving the home team a 3 point lead at the break.

Titans bounce back from first loss to feast on Lions

2008-11-28 | Jim Murphy

After being held to 45 yards rushing against the Jets last week, the Titans’ running backs ran wild for 292 yards against their hapless hosts with Chris Johnson racking up 125 yards and LenDale White adding 106. The 47 points scored by Tennessee was the most in a single game since they scored 48 against Green Bay in 2004. Kerry Collins had another efficient, mistake free game with 127 yards on 11/18 passing with no interceptions. Even Vince Young got into the act, playing for the first time since opening week. Young threw one pass—a 54 yard completion.

Colt McCoy also continued his bid for a Heisman Trophy with an impressive all around offensive performance consisting of 311 yards passing (23/28) with two TD passes, plus 48 yards rushing and two rushing TDs. He managed to defeat the Aggies for the first time in three tries and set a couple of school records in the process—he earned career victory #31 as a starting QB, breaking Vince Young’s mark and pushed his passing yardage to an all-time Longhorn best 3,594 yards.

Knicks tired of Marbury’s act, Mulling next move

2008-11-28 | Jim Murphy

The Knicks had already resigned themselves to the fact that they were going to pay Marbury $20+ million this season to ride the bench, but weren’t about to let his insubordination go unpunished. The team suspended him for one game without pay and ordered him to stay away from the team and their practice facility until Monday at the earliest. The one game suspension will cost Marbury upwards of $400,000.

Marbury refuses to play again as Pistons beat undermanned Knicks

2008-11-27 | Jim Murphy

The Pistons had been embarrassed in their previous game by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavs, but they looked like an entirely different team on Wednesday night. They had a special practice which players described as a “mini-camp” specially designed to better acquaint recently acquired Alan Iverson with the team’s tactics. Iverson finished with 16 points, and the Pistons looked more cohesive than they have sine the trade that sent Chauncy Billups to Denver for “The Answer”.

Deron Williams returns as Jazz dominate Grizz

2008-11-27 | Jim Murphy

Utah’s All Star point guard Deron Williams returned to the lineup after missing seven games due to a relapse of a pre season ankle injury and helped the Jazz rout Memphis 117-100 in Salt Lake City on Wednesday night. The 117 points represented Utah’s highest point output of the year, with much of the credit for the outburst given to the return of their offensive sparkplug. Williams scored 11 points and added 15 points in his first game back and his presence alone gave the Jazz a visible boost in their energy and tempo.

The Portland Trailblazers ran their home record to a perfect 6-0 with a 38 point annihilation of the Miami Heat on Wednesday night. Before a crowd in excess of 20,000 at the Rose Garden Arena, Portland scored a season high 37 first quarter points en route to a lopsided 106-68 victory. Portland led 37-17 after one quarter and 59-40 at the half. The Blazers punished the Heat by a 30-11 margin in the fourth quarter to produce the final margin.

2008-11-25 | Jim Murphy

Ball State went up 14-0 in the first quarter, but Western Michigan answered tying the game at 14-14 early in the 2nd. That’s when Lewis and Davis took over, and Ball State ran off 24 unanswered points to stake the Cardinals to a 38-14 lead heading into the final quarter. Western Michigan scored early in the fourth to cut the lead to 38-21 but MiQuale Lewis ran for his final touchdown with just under five minutes to play to put the game on ice.

Drew Brees destroys Packers secondary in 51-29 romp

2008-11-25 | Jim Murphy

Brees threw for 323 yards on 20 of 26 passing, with four TD passes and no interceptions. The Saints put a total of 7 TD passes on the board, tying a franchise record. Their 51 points scored also equaled the all time franchise best. Deuce McAllister ran for his 54th career touchdown as a Saint in the third quarter, which set a new team record. Brees also has a decent shot of challenging Dan Marino’s 1984 single season record of 5,084 yards passing—he’s got 3,574 yards with five games remaining.

Washington Wizards fire coach Eddie Jordan
Washington Wizards fire coach Eddie Jordan

2008-11-25 | Jim Murphy

The Wizards opened the season by losing their first five games, then upset the Utah Jazz to avoid their first 0-6 start in franchise history. That success was short lived, however, as they immediately went back in the tank losing their next four games. The last straw was likely a sloppy 122-117 loss to the NY Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night—after a couple of trades the Knicks dressed the NBA minimum eight players and only had seven players available as petulant guard Stephon Marbury refused to play.

Jets blitz Titans to end unbeaten season
Jets blitz Titans to end unbeaten season

2008-11-24 | Jim Murphy

Brett Favre played one of his most effective games in a Jets uniform, racking up 224 yards on 25-32 passing including two TD passes and 1 interception. New York has now won five straight games after a 3-3 start to the Favre era. The Jets dominated the time of possession battle, 40:30 to 19:30 and simply wore out the Titans defense in the process. Favre wasn’t going so far as to proclaim his team the best in the NFL, but he did sound a bullish note on their victory over Tennessee.

Pacman on thin ice despite NFL reinstatement
Pacman on thin ice despite NFL reinstatement

2008-11-24 | Jim Murphy

This is Pacman’s second “second chance” from the league after he was suspended for the entire 2007 season for his off field behavior. He was acquired by the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason, and the NFL agreed to give him another chance convinced in part by the team’s assignment of a “security detail” to follow Pacman around and presumably keep him out of trouble. Ironically, it was that “security detail” that precipitated his latest “indefinite” suspension by the league—Pacman got into a drunken scuffle with one of his bodyguards at a Dallas area strip club. The NFL took a dim view of Pacman’s choice of leisure time activities and swung the hammer.

Twolves rout Pistons for first road win
Twolves rout Pistons for first road win

2008-11-24 | Jim Murphy

Last Wednesday, the Detroit Pistons played perhaps their best game since the Chauncy Billups/Alan Iverson trade as they ended Cleveland’s eight game winning streak with a decisive triumph. It’s been all downhill since, beginning with an 18 point blowout loss at Boston the following night. The Pistons struggles may have reached a nadir, however, as they were dominated at home on Sunday by the lowly Minnesota TWolves. The Wolves routed the Pistons 106-80 to win for the first time all season on the road and improve their overall record to 3-9.

#5 Oklahoma routs #2 Texas Tech
#5 Oklahoma routs #2 Texas Tech

2008-11-23 | Jim Murphy

The scoring floodgates opened in the first minute of the second quarter when OU’s Chris Brown ran it in from three yards out. Those were the first of 35 second quarter points for the Sooners who scored via the air on two TD passes from Sam Bradford (19 and 28 yards), along with another rushing TD for both Brown and Murray. Tech’s Graham Harrell found Tremain Swindall from 25 yards out during the period, but it did little to mitigate the damage from the Sooner barrage. When the smoke had cleared Oklahoma entered the locker room with a 42-7 halftime lead that they’d never relinquish.

#4 Florida has no trouble with The Citadel
#4 Florida has no trouble with The Citadel

2008-11-23 | Jim Murphy

No matter how you slice it up statistically, this was a beatdown of epic proportions. Florida scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions and rolled up 512 yards in the first half alone. QB Tim Tebow threw for 201 yards and 3 TDs, while running back Chris Rainey ran for 142 yards and a touchdown—not bad considering that both were removed for substitutes early in the 2nd quarter. All told, eight different Gators would score touchdowns as the team finished with 705 yards of total offense—had they wanted to run up the score they could have doubled that yardage total and put triple digits on the scoreboard.

Stephon Marbury refuses playing time with Knicks

2008-11-23 | Jim Murphy

The New York Knicks are in the process of creating salary cap space, and in the past week have traded Jamal Crawford, Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins. Since the Knicks were still awaiting the players they acquired in the trade, their bench was depleted for Friday night’s game against Milwaukee. With NBA rules requiring a team to have eight players dressed or else forfeit the game, Stephon Marbury dressed for the first time this season. Furthermore, he was told by head coach Mike D'Antoni that there would be 30 to 35 minutes of playing time available should he want it.

Utah wins easily over BYU to remain undefeated

2008-11-23 | Jim Murphy

Meanwhile, BYU’s offense imploded thanks in large part to QB Max Hall’s brutal afternoon. Hall finished with 205 yards on 21 of 41 passing with no touchdowns, five interceptions and a fumble—accounting for all six of BYU’s turnovers. Three of Hall’s interceptions were converted into Utah scores, as was his lost fumble. Hall didn’t have much to say about his performance after the game, instead paying respect to the intensity of the partisan Utah crowd and the Utes’ overall solid play.

Montreal Canadians retire Patrick Roy’s #33

2008-11-23 | Jim Murphy

Roy’s career numbers definitely merit the honor. He played over ten seasons in Montreal, with the Habs winning the Stanley Cup twice during his tenure. Both Cup victories were led by Roy, who twice won the Conn Smythe trophy for playoff MVP as a Canadian (he’d add another trophy and two more Stanley Cups while in Colorado). He won the 1986 Cup at the age of 20 and became the youngest playoff MVP in history. For his 2nd Montreal Cup victory in 1993, he set another NHL record with ten consecutive OT playoff victories.

Hatton dominates Malignaggi in 11th round stoppage victory

2008-11-23 | Jim Murphy

With new trainer Floyd Mayweather, Sr. in his corner, Hatton hurt Malignaggi early and never really let up. After a fairly even first round—the only round that Malignaggi won on many scorecards—Hatton nailed his opponent in the 2nd with a wicked straight right that nearly sent Malignaggi to the canvas. The American challenger grabbed on to Hatton to keep from going down, and would continue the “hugging and holding” for the rest of the fight.

Oklahoma City Thunder sends coach Carlesimo packing
Oklahoma City Thunder sends coach Carlesimo packing

2008-11-22 | Jim Murphy

Carlesimo coached Seattle last year before following the team to Oklahoma City prior to the start of the season. He posted a 21-74 record in 95 games with the team. His undoing this season wasn’t so much his record but the Thunder’s inability to be competitive in many of the losses. The team has lost by an average of 12.9 points per game—worst in the NBA. Only three of the team’s defeats this year have been by single digits.

Portland routs Sacramento behind Blake’s six three pointers
Portland routs Sacramento behind Blake’s six three pointers

2008-11-22 | Jim Murphy

The rout of Sacramento was the Blazers second blowout win in as many games, having destroyed Chicago 116-74 in the Rose City on Wednesday. This one wasn’t quite that one sided, but it was essentially over by the end of the third quarter which afforded Portland an opportunity to give Greg Oden, Brandon Roy and Steve Blake plenty of rest in the fourth. Portland never trailed after the midway point of the first quarter and led 28-25 at the end of the period. They extended that lead in the 2nd, heading to the locker room at halftime with a 57-51 advantage.

"Babalu" wins strikeforce light heavyweight MMA title

2008-11-22 | Jim Murphy

A -350 wagering favorite despite his challenger status, Sobral was expected to use his world class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills and vast experience against superior competition to dominate the tough but limited Southworth. It didn’t happen that way, as Southworth easily got the better of things in the first round. Southworth’s style isn’t exactly one that provides Wanderlei Silva type excitement—he looks to use his strength and conditioning to control his opponent en route to a decision victory. While the result makes him something of a MMA equivalent to boxing’s John Ruiz, it does afford him the best chance of victory.

Steelers’ defense shuts down Cincy
Steelers’ defense shuts down Cincy

2008-11-21 | Jim Murphy

The Bengals offense may have known how to execute, but the Steelers stout defense kept them from doing so. Pittsburgh’s defense held Cincinnati to 11 first downs, 208 total yards and helped give the Steelers the time of possession edge 35:20 to 24:40. Five of the Cincy first downs game on an opening TD drive, with the Steelers holding them to a paltry six the rest of the way. It was the eleventh straight game in which the Steelers held their opponents to 300 yards or less, which is the third longest run in NFL history.

Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 24 points despite a substandard 8 of 23 shooting night. With the Lakers firmly in control heading into the fourth Kobe was able to sit for most of the period as Coach Phil Jackson continued in his effort to limit the defending MVP’s minutes early in the season. Kobe’s former teammate/nemesis Shaquille O’Neal added 15 points and 9 boards for the Suns. Phoenix’s leading scorer was Amare Stoudemire with 21 points.

Cleveland has struggled against Detroit in recent years, losing two straight, four of five and 9 of 11 against the Pistons. This time promised to be different as the Cavs came to MoTown on an eight game winning streak and LeBron James averaging 30 ppg to lead the league in scoring. During the first half it looked like the Cavs fortunes against Detroit were going to improve as Cleveland shot out to a 24-16 first quarter lead and took a 49-38 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The UFC wanted their fighters to sign over the rights to use their likenesses in the forthcoming game–for life. It was the “for life” part that Fitch and several other fighters had an issue with. It’s also important to note that the fighters who took issue with Dana’s request were represented by DeWayne Zinkin and Bob Cook and/or were American Kickboxing Academy fighters. Dana has apparently had a beef with Zinkin and AKA for years and this situation brought it to a head.

Romo finished 19 of 27 for 198 yards with one TD pass and two interceptions. Statistics notwithstanding, however, the emotional boost he gave to his teammates just by returning to the lineup was palpable.

Kurt Warner leads Cards to win at Seattle
Kurt Warner leads Cards to win at Seattle

Arizona certainly has been helped by playing in the league’s worst division—they’re the only team in the NFC West with a winning record and their division “rivals” (San Francisco, Seattle and St. Louis) have combined for a 7-23 record to date. Still, the Cards have taken care of their business and are now 7-3 for the first time since 1977. Barring a monumental collapse by Arizona and a seismic shift in the fortunes of their NFC West rivals they’ll almost certainly win the division this year.

The game started innocently enough, as the Niners took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on Frank Gore’s 5 yard TD run. St. Louis cut the deficit to 7-3 early in the second quarter on Josh Brown’s 24 yard field goal. At this point the game looked like a typical 49ers contest where they’d struggle life and death for every point. That changed quickly, as the offensive floodgates burst open for San Francisco.

The Titans got on the scoreboard first as a Rob Bironas field goal accounted for the only scoring of the first quarter. The Jaguars took over in the 2nd, with two Maurice Jones-Drew rushing touchdowns providing a 14-3 cushion at halftime. Most of the Titans problems were self inflicted, with numerous dropped passes and costly penalties making Jacksonville’s task easier than it should have been. Kerry Collins even threw his first interception since October 5th.
