#8 Florida avenges 'Gator Stomp' in rout of #6 Georgia
2008-11-04
Florida had circled this game at Georgia after the Bulldogs beat them at home 42-30 last year and embarrassed the Gators with the infamous “Gator Stomp” end zone celebration. After Saturday’s 49-10 rout Florida can consider their revenge mission accomplished. It was the largest Florida margin of victory in the series since a 47-7 triumph in 1996.
Not surprisingly, defending Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow led the way for the Gators accounting for five TDs—three rushing and two passing. He finished with 154 yards through the air on 10/13 passing and no interceptions. Georgia, meanwhile, turned the ball over 4 times on three Matthew Stafford interceptions and a fumble by Knowshon Moreno. The ‘Dawgs’ also missed two field goals to cap off a mistake filled afternoon of football.
Tim Tebow summed up the Gators’ mixture of triumph and relief:
"It doesn't get any sweeter than this. We didn't have to talk about it. We just had to go out there and show that we're a different team and prove that we worked extremely hard. We didn't want that to happen again to us."
Florida has been playing like a team possessed since their upset loss to Ole Miss on 9/27. They’ve since won four straight and have outscored their opponents 177-36 in their last 13 quarters of football. They’ll head to Vanderbilt next Saturday before hosting South Carolina and longtime Florida coach Steve Spurrier on 11/15. They’ll conclude their season with a home game against The Citadel and the 11/29 rivalry contest at Florida State.
Georgia will hit the road for their next two games, next Saturday at Kentucky and on 11/15 at Auburn. They’ll close out the regular season with the traditional rivalry game against Georgia Tech on 11/29.
