Titans remain perfect with ot victory
2008-11-05
The Tennessee Titans didn’t bring their “A Game” but they used some opportunistic defense and four Rob Bironas field goals to get past Green Bay in OT 19-16. Bironas nailed the game winner with 9:36 left in OT from 41 yards out and the Titans survived as the NFL’s only unbeaten team improving their record to 8-0.
Prior to the winning FG in OT, Bironas had missed a 46 yard effort that would have won the game in regulation. He clearly wanted a shot at redemption:
"I was hoping for exactly what happened. We'd win the toss and get another shot at it. I don't miss many, so I definitely wanted another shot at it to put us in the lead and go home with the victory, 8-0.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher’s postgame comments conceded that his team hadn’t played their best:
"When you win eight games, you're going to on occasion need to win some like this, and that is just what we did. We hung in there."
The victory also represented Tennessee’s 11th straight regular season win, which tied a franchise record set in 1993 when they were still the Houston Oilers. They’ll get a chance to go to 9-0 on the season and win their team record 12th straight against the Chicago Bears in “The Windy City” next Sunday.
The Packers won the yardage battle, gaining 390 yards to the Titans 347. Not surprisingly, Tennessee controlled the rushing yardage battle (178 to 102) while Green Bay held the passing edge (288 yards to 169). Green Bay shot itself in the foot with two costly turnovers, while the Titans Kerry Collins continued his steady, mistake free play with 180 yards passing and no turnovers.
Green Bay didn’t take solace from playing the undefeated Titans tough, as QB Aaron Rodgers noted in his postgame comments:
"There are no moral victories. We wanted to get to 5-3. We felt like we had a good game plan and we were very aggressive. I just didn't throw the ball as well as I wanted to. I'm very disappointed about the way I played, but our resolve is strong and I'll come back next week and be ready to play in a big game against the Vikings."
