DWIGHT HOWARD WINS THIRD STRAIGHT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Though the Portland Trailblazers were able to beat the Boston Celtics last week without team leader/All Star shooting guard Brandon Roy, things don’t work out well for the team if they’re without his services for too long.  A 92-77 home loss to the New Orleans Hornets was evidence of that as Chris Paul abused every guard that the Blazers tried to stop win with.  In the short term, at least, the team will have to find a way to win without him as the team announced late Saturday that Roy will be out 7-10 days.

The good news was that an MRI showed no damage or other areas of concern with Roy’s surgically repaired left knee.  The verdict was that the injury was a simple hamstring sprain and will only require a few days of rest.

Roy didn’t travel with the team to Los Angeles on Sunday for a game against the Lakers at The Staples Center.  He’ll definitely miss home games this week against Detroit and Golden State, with the best case scenario for his return being January 12th in Chicago against the Bulls.  More likely, the team will hold him out a couple more days and he’ll be back in action on January 14th when the Blazers play the Sixers in Philadelphia.

Roy had surgery to repair a partial tear in the meniscus of his left knee in the off season, and there was initial concern that he’d suffered a re-injury of the knee or surrounding area.  Fortunately, that wasn’t the case and the current diagnosis is considered something of a relief to the team and Portland basketball fans.
