DUCKS IN PLAYOFF HUNT AFTER WIN OVER PREDS

The Anaheim Ducks used tough defense and the solid goaltending of Jean-Sebastien Giguere to steal a 2-1 shutout win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night in the ‘Music City’.  The Predators and Ducks are both tied for the 8th position in the NHL’s Western Conference with 78 points, but the tiebreakers give Anaheim a tenuous hold on the final postseason berth.

Defense dominated a scoreless first period which saw the two teams combine for only 9 total shots on goal.  The Ducks’ Drew Miller would break the stalemate late in the second period with his third goal of the season assisted by Teemu Selanne and Andrew Ebbett.  The Predators would open up the offense in the third period, outshooting the Ducks 15-4 in the final 20 minutes of regulation.  They would tie the game at the 4:12 mark when Shea Weber lit the lamp on the power play assisted by David Legwand and Martin Erat.  After a scoreless overtime period, the Ducks would prevail in the shootout for the hard fought victory.

The victory was only the Ducks’ second in their last six trips to Nashville and left them on the right side of the Western Conference postseason cutoff, at least for one day.  They’ll still have to fight to earn a playoff berth, with five teams separated by a total of three points scrapping for the final two postseason spots.   Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said his squad was fortunate to steal the victory:

"Points are at a premium. Both teams are in desperation mode, but we were fortunate enough to steal an extra point in the shootout."

The Ducks have won six of their last ten games, while Nashville has started to struggle with only four victories in their last ten games.  Anaheim has also played well in ‘sudden death’ situations with three of their last four victories coming in overtime or shootout.

Nashville has a tough assignment on Thursday night as they host the San Jose Sharks, with the Los Angeles Kings coming to town on Saturday.  They’ll face the Red Wings in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.
