T.O. finds a new home in Buffalo
2009-03-09
It was only a matter of time before an NFL team was desperate enough to amp up their offense that they’d take a chance on brutally talented but slightly crazy wide receiver Terrell Owens. Enter the Buffalo Bills, who acquired Drew Bledsoe last week and have now signed ‘T.O.’ to give him someone to throw to. On Saturday, Buffalo announced that they’d signed Owens to a one year, $6.5 million contract just two days after being cut loose by the Dallas Cowboys.
Owens will join Lee Evans as the Bills’ primary targets for Bledsoe, J.P. Losman, Trent Edwards or whomever else the team puts under center. ‘T.O’ put up solid numbers for the Cowboys last year, catching 69 passes for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns but was let go as Dallas tried to enhance the ‘character’ of their team. At the press conference introducing him to the Buffalo media, Owens quickly took a shot at his former team by pointing out the Bills’ support from fans north of the border:
"I'm leaving America's team [for] North America's team.”
He continued by saying that he thought Buffalo had the talent to go far in the playoffs, and he was happy to be the ‘missing piece’ of the puzzle:
"I must move on, and it's another beginning for me. If I can be that extra added piece to get them to the playoffs, then that's what I'm here for. I looked at the defensive side of ball and offensive side of the ball, and these guys have all the pieces."
Long a franchise known for a productive offense, Buffalo is a far cry from the Jim Kelly/Andre Reed era. The team has ranked 25th or lower in total offense for the past six seasons and their inability to score points has become a very sore point with their fans. ‘T.O’ said that if he can do anything its put points on the board:
"I'm looking forward to getting together with Trent, Lee and the guys and putting some points on the board. That's what I've done everywhere I've been, and it's going to continue."
Owens also addressed talk of his ‘attitude problem’ while with Dallas:
"That's all hearsay. If you look at all the comments coming from my teammates with the Cowboys the last three years, it's all been positive. Prior to that, I really don't want to get into it."
Perhaps the smartest thing that Buffalo did in acquiring Owens is signing him to a one year contract. It’ll keep him motivated to play his best. There is the risk that he’ll have a huge year and bolt for another team, but it’s apparently a risk that the Bills are willing to take in order to jump start their moribund offense.
