While it’s unwise to put too much importance on NFL preseason performances, it’s hard not to be impressed with the New Orleans Saints’ offense. In particular, it’s impossible to not be impressed with the play of starting QB Drew Brees. Brees played only three series against the Oakland Raiders on Saturday night, but that was enough—by the time he left the Saints led 21-0 en route to a 45-7 thrashing on their hosts. New Orleans improved to 3-0 on the NFL preseason, while the Raiders dropped to 1-2.

After the fight it was revealed that he’d suffered from a staph infection during training, severe enough to land him in the hospital for five days. He insisted that the loss was entirely attributable to his illness.

The New York Giants weren’t the only losers in their NFL preseason game against the Chicago Bears. The Denver Broncos and their fans had to watch as their former franchise QB Jay Cutler carved up the Giants’ defense and think of what might have been. After a rough opening week, Cutler looked to be in regular season form and the Chicago Bears went on to win 17-3. Both teams are now 1-1 in NFL preseason action.

The good news for the Cleveland Browns was that their offense came out swinging on Saturday night, scoring 20 points in the first quarter en route to victory. The bad news—it was against the NFL’s worst team and their struggling rookie QB. Browns QB Derek Anderson played well, while the Detroit Lions’ rookie signal caller Matt Stafford struggled mightily as the Browns easily took a 27-10 decision in NFL preseason action. Both teams are now 1-1 in the preseason.

After two straight wins gave the BC Lions hope that they’d turned the corner on the CFL season, they’re officially back at square one. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Fred Reid torched the BC Lions defense all night long, and his career performance helped his team earn a lopsided 37-10 victory at Vancouver on Friday night. While everyone within the organization of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings is putting on a ‘grin and bear it face’ and trying to maintain the party line that there’s much rejoicing over Brett Favre being their QB this season, one former Viking great isn’t playing that game. NFL Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton, who has been critical of Favre’s ‘I’m retired/I’m not retired’ act for awhile now has stepped up his criticism of the former Green Bay Packer/New York Jet. On the Sirius Satellite Radio NFL program ‘The Opening Drive’ Favre pulled no punches with his criticism of “The Gunslinger”, describing the whole scene surrounding his signing by the Vikings as ‘a circus’.

When the biggest play of a NFL football game is an extra point, there’s a good chance it was a dull contest. Such was the case on Thursday night in rainy Foxboro, Massachusetts as the Cincinnati Bengals edged the New England Patriots by a 7-6 score. The big play of the game? A point after touchdown by the Bengals backup kicker, none other than wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.

The Baltimore Ravens are clearly responding to first year defensive coordinator Greg Mattison. In Mattison’s debut as an NFL coordinator the Ravens obliterated their regional rivals the Washington Redskins, completing a shutout by a final score of 23-0. It was the sort of sloppy NFL preseason game that made the coaches more interested in escaping with as few injuries as possible than with winning or evaluating talent. In a driving rainstorm at Arrowhead Stadium the Houston Texans outlasted the Kansas City Chiefs to take a 16-10 NFL exhibition victory. It was the first game of the NFL preseason for both teams, and they were more or less happy to emerge unscathed from the deluge.

In a NFL preseason game characterized by rainy weather, sloppy field conditions and a quick exit for both team’s starters, the Miami Dolphins outlasted their in-state rivals the Jacksonville Jaguars by a 12-9 score. Only one touchdown was scored in the game, which was a battle of field goal kickers until the third quarter. Miami’s game winning score came on a 33 yard touchdown strike from Chad Henne to tight end Ernest Wilford.

It’s been a rough stretch of CFL football for the Toronto Argonauts, and they may have hit rock bottom on Friday night. The Argos appeared to be on the verge of breaking their eight game home losing streak, entering the fourth quarter with a 25-14 lead but ended up on the wrong end of a 36-28 final score that ran their streak of futility at the Rogers Centre to nine games. It was also Toronto’s ninth consecutive loss to BC. BC improved to 3-4 with the victory, while Toronto’s record slipped to 2-5.

Gina Carano put women’s MMA on the map, but Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos may have become the sport’s first dominant female champion by virtue of her overwhelming TKO victory in the main event of Saturday’s STRIKEFORCE event. ‘Cyborg’ simply was too physically strong and her punches too powerful for Carano, who fought valiantly before succumbing to a barrage of ‘ground and pound’ punches at the end of the first round.

Orton, who was acquired from Chicago in the off-season, threw interceptions on each of his first three offensive series. Despite losing to the New Orleans Saints in their NFL preseason opener 17-7, the Cincinnati Bengals had a lot to be happy about. Most significantly, they were elated over the return of QB Carson Palmer after he’d missed most of the last NFL season with an elbow injury. Palmer’s play—133 yards on 7 of 11 passing—gave them even more to be happy about despite being on the wrong end of the final score.

Buffalo didn’t score an offensive touchdown, and that’s not going to get it done in the NFL regular season.

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva had lost a lot of his luster coming into Saturday night’s UFC 101 matchup with former light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin. He was undefeated in his previous nine UFC contests, but his last three victories had been far from impressive. He’d beaten overmatched James Irvin last July in his first effort at 205. That was followed by a TKO win against Patrick Cote when Cote blew out his knee mid fight. In his most recent bout, he’d pouted and showboated his way to a unanimous decision victory by default against a thoroughly overwhelmed Thales Leites. On that night in Montreal he’d heard an abundance of boos from the fans who at one point started a “GSP” chant in reference to his most frequent challenger for “pound for pound” MMA supremacy. Even Dana White criticized his effort and finally conceded that St. Pierre might, indeed, be the best all around fighter in the game.

The league had reached a new agreement with players earlier this year, but was unable to convince enough owners that they had a viable plan to return to profitability. The league’s statement continued that “there are no other viable options available to the league right now."

According to the old saying ‘time heals all wounds’. In the fight game, money—or the potential of it—has the same curative effect. The latest evidence of this is Friday’s announcement that Tito Ortiz has patched things up with Dana White and agreed to a new contract to fight in the UFC. The Hamilton Tiger Cats may not be among the elite teams of the CFL, but they’re definitely a scrappy, up and coming squad. They’re also a major thorn in the side of the BC Lions, whom the Ti-Cats defeated for the second time this season on Friday night. Hamilton used a productive rushing game and a stout defense to upend BC at home by a 30-18 margin less than a month after stealing a 31-28 win in Vancouver.
