BILLS UPSET JETS IN OVERTIME

2009-10-19
TITANS WILL TRY TO TRADE VINCE YOUNG The Buffalo Bills’ offense is still sputtering, but they were able to do enough on Sunday to erase a 13-3 halftime lead and defeat the New York Jets in overtime 16-13.  After missing a 46 yard potential game winning field goal at the end of regulation, Bills’ place kicker Rian Lindell nailed a 47 yard shot in overtime for the victory.   Buffalo raised its record to 2-4 with the victory while the Jets slipped to 3-3 on the NFL season.

NFL sports betting players who took the generous +9’ price on the Bills as road underdogs were rewarded with the victory.   Both teams evened their record against the NFL pointspread at 3-3. The 29 combined points went UNDER the posted total of 35’.  The Bills evened their NFL totals record at 3-3, while the Jets have gone UNDER in four of their six games this season.

Bills’ coach Dick Jauron was obviously pleased with the upset victory and praised his team on their tenacity in the face of adversity this season:

"That sure was a great win for our football team. We certainly needed it. I can't say enough about that group of guys. They won't quit, no matter what happens."

Kicker Lindell talked about his thought process after missing the potential game winner at the end of regulation:

"I told them, 'Let's get inside the 30 and hammer away.  I've got to make that.”

He also praised his teammates’ attitude and resilience:

"We had to pick each other up. We made more mistakes than we'd like to. It's nice to overcome that and battle back."

The Jets’ Thomas Jones set a new team rushing mark with 210 yards, beating Curtis Martin’s record by two yards.  He wasn’t happy with the personal accomplishment:

"We lost. I could've had 2 yards. We lost the game."

Making matters worse, nose tackle Kris Jenkins left the game in the first half with a knee injury that coach Rex Ryan characterized as ‘probably severe’.  Teammate Shaun Ellis lamented his loss:

"It's a huge blow. Guys are going to have to step up across the board and fill in his shoes, and those are big shoes to fill."

Rookie QB Mark Sanchez played his worst game of the season, throwing five interceptions.  He took the blame for the defeat:

"I don't know if I could play any worse. It was totally my fault and I owe these guys a lot. Of the six games, three losses, two of them I felt like you can blame No. 6 on offense. That's not a good feeling. I've got to turn this thing around."

Buffalo will travel south to Charlotte, North Carolina for a game against the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.  They’ll face the Houston Texans at home the following weekend before a bye week.  The Jets head to Oakland for a game against the Raiders next Sunday before hosting the Miami Dolphins on November 1.
