BRAYLON EDWARDS TRADED TO JETS AFTER RUN IN WITH LEBRON’S HOMEBOY
2009-10-08
Here’s a tip for members of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns who enjoy playing with the franchise—remember that its LeBron James’ town. Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards found that out the hard way, enduring a public admonishment from the Cleveland Cavaliers’ superstar after a fight with one of James’ entourage this past weekend. Edwards didn’t even have chance to think of a comeback before he was shipped to the New York Jets.According to multiple media reports, Edwards got into a scrap with LeBron’s friend Edward Givens outside of a Cleveland nightclub about 2:30 AM Monday morning. James was at home when the incident occurred but got a phone call from his friend informing him of the incident. Edwards described the altercation as follows:
"Braylon comes up and started saying things, degrading. He said if it wasn't for LeBron or the Four Horsemen, I wouldn't have what I have, nor would I be able to get girls. Everyone knows Braylon has a problem with LeBron.”
"I had to speak up for myself. The conversation started to escalate. As some of his teammates started to pull him back, he punched me. As long as I've known Braylon, I've allowed him and his friends to come into our events free of charge. Whatever jealousy he has with LeBron, he felt he needed to take it out on me."
At that point, James presumably began to swing ‘the hammer’ and made his displeasure public in a statement following the Cavs’ practice later that day:
"I've never crossed paths with Braylon before, but it seems like there's a little jealousy going on with Braylon and me and my friends. I have no idea why. I've never said anything to Braylon at all. But for him to do that is very childish. My friend is 130 pounds. Seriously. It's like hitting one of my kids. It doesn't make sense."
"The situation is very sensitive right now, but it's unfortunate that it happened. Hopefully my friend is doing well."
This prompted a somewhat sheepish reply from the wide receiver saying that he didn’t have an issue with LeBron and a later, more emphatic statement from his agent, but the damage had been done. The reigning NBA MVP then exercised his Sinatra-like ‘grip’ and within 24 hours Edwards was a New York Jet.
To be fair, Edwards was already on thin ice in Cleveland due to previous run-ins with the law and poor on field discipline. He’d been assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty earlier in the day after punching a Cincinnati Bengals player, and failed to record a catch for the first time his career. Browns’ coach Eric Mangini made clear that wouldn’t fly in this statement after the loss to their in-state rivals:
"Personal conduct is very important to me. I always want our players to put themselves in the most positive positions. This is something I will continue to gather information on."
Edwards will be in the lineup for the Jets’ Monday Night Football game against the Miami Dolphins. Players who wish to bet on NFL football’s week ending matchup will find the Jets a -1’ road favorite with a total of 36’
