BRONCOS HAVE NO TROUBLE WITH BUMBLING RAIDERS
2009-10-02
No one expected the Oakland Raiders to be good this year, but the Denver Broncos are surprising people. After an off season full of controversy and turmoil and a disappointing preseason, the Broncos have opened the NFL regular season 3-0. Their latest victory came on the road, where they had no trouble at all dispensing with the Oakland Raiders by a final score of 23-3. Kyle Orton passed for 157 yards and a touchdown, while Jamarcus Russell had a pitiful afternoon as he produced only 61 yards passing and two interceptions. Orton has not thrown an interception this season and the Broncos as a team have committed just one turnover. The Broncos easily covered as -2’ road favorites to improve to 3-0 against the NFL pointspread as well. Despite their 0-3 record, the Raiders had gotten the money in each of their first two games leaving their ATS record following this setback at 1-2. The 26 points scored went UNDER the total of 38. The Raiders have gone UNDER in two of their three games this season, while the Broncos have posted UNDER verdicts in all three of their contests.
Orton was clearly pleased with the way things have gone in Denver so far:
“We're happy with where we're at, 3-0. We've been improving every single week. I thought it was a clean game. We got off to a good start, no turnovers again and we made plays in the passing game when we needed to. That's kind of the formula we wanted to take into this week and we executed it."
Raiders’ cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha had little explanation for his team’s struggles:
"There's some glaring problems that need to be fixed, in all phases of the game. So I don't think we have quite a read on who we are. And that's concerning, because at this point you want to know what type of team you are."
Russell was the target of boos all afternoon, though he insisted that he’s still got the support of his teammates:
"I know that the guys in my locker room are behind me. When the fans get to that, it's kind of where they seem like they're fed up. But again, until you come out and play like I know we should and get back on track it will be a different story."
The Raiders will try to get back on track as they take to the road, playing the Houston Texans this weekend. Oakland is a +9 road underdog with the total set at 42’. They’ll then head to the northeast to meet the New York Giants before returning home to play the Philadelphia Eagles on October 18th. Denver will host the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, with the Broncos a +3 home underdog. The total in the Dallas/Denver game has been posted at 42’. Denver will welcome the New England Patriots to town the following weekend before traveling to southern California to play the San Diego Chargers on Monday, October 19th.
