GEORGIA TECH SHOCKS #4 VIRGINIA TECH
2009-10-19
Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets held off a late game rally to shock #4 ranked Virginia Tech 28-23 at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta. Leading 7-3 at halftime, Tech broke open the game in the second half and improved to 6-1 on the season. The Hokies dropped to 5-2.The Yellow Jackets rewarded their college football betting backers by winning outright as +3’ home underdogs. Georgia Tech improved to 4-2 against the spread while Virginia Tech dropped to 3-4 versus the number. The 51 combined points went just UNDER the posted total of 54. The Hokies have gone OVER in four of their seven games this season, while the Jackets evened their college football totals record at 3-3.
Nesbitt said the victory was the highlight of his college football career to date:
"This is the biggest thing that's happened since I've been here.”
While venerable Hokies’ coach Frank Beamer wasn’t making excuses and gave ample credit to Georgia Tech’s tough to stop spread offense:
"What happened out there wasn't because of lack of effort. Now is the time to come back and let's go get the next one. There's a lot of football to be played."
"Their offense was just hard to stop. Their quarterback was doing a great job, and we got into a little bit of a guessing game."
The Jackets completed only one pass during the game but ran for 309 total yards—over 250 in the second half alone.
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said it keeps his team alive in the race to win the ACC Coastal division title:
"We already have a loss and I don't think you can win our side with two. One loss is going to win it. What we did tonight was stay alive and put everyone else back in it."
The Hokies will get next weekend off and return to action on Thursday, October 29th as they host North Carolina in a nationally televised game. They’ll play on the road against East Carolina the following Thursday and again eleven days later on Saturday, November 14th at the University of Maryland. Georgia Tech will travel to Charlottesville to play the University of Virginia next Saturday, and then head to Nashville on October 31 to play Vanderbilt. They’ll return home on Saturday, November 7 to play Wake Forest.
