GIANTS STAY UNDEFEATED WITH WIN OVER CHIEFS

2009-10-08
TITANS WILL TRY TO TRADE VINCE YOUNG The New York Giants may be the best team in the NFL at this point, and they continued their undefeated run on Sunday with a 27-16 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicates.  Eli Manning threw for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns against one interception, before leaving late in the game with a bruised heel.  His status is ‘questionable’ for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders.  New York opened up a 27-3 lead early in the fourth quarter before Kansas City narrowed the score with two late ‘garbage time’ touchdowns.  The Giants are now 4-0 on the NFL season, while the Chiefs are 0-4.

The late scores by Kansas City may have been meaningless in terms of the final outcome, but they were of critical importance to NFL totals players as it turned what looked like an easy UNDER into a 43 point push.  Both teams had previously gone OVER in two of their first three games.NFL pointspread players may have had some late game trepidation, but the two fourth quarter touchdowns by the Chiefs didn’t change the wagering outcome.  New York covered as a -9 road favorite, running their ATS record to 4-0 while Kansas City slumped to 0-4 against the money.

After the contest, Manning talked about his freak heel injury though stressed that he’s planning to play on Sunday.  He’s since missed two practices this week:

"It was a noncontact. It just happened into the drop. It was the play before the touchdown, where I had Steve Smith and threw it a little short. I always assume I'm going to play, that I'm going to be out there. I've always been a pretty quick healer. I'll be doing everything I can possibly do this week to get healthy and prepared to play Oakland. We'll find out more tomorrow. I can walk around and move around, but there is some discomfort."

Backup David Carr finished the game, and will replace Manning against the Raiders if he’s unable to go.

Chiefs’ coach Todd Haley suggested his team strive to emulate the powerful Giants:

"We've got to stick together as a team, which I think our guys are doing very well. We've got to pull together and start becoming a team much like that team across the field from us today.  Change is not fun. We've got to be better in all areas."

NFL linesmakers don’t seem too concerned about the Giants’ fortunes with or without Manning in the lineup.  They’ve been installed as a -14’ home favorite against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, with the total set at 38.  The Giants will play at New Orleans next weekend before returning home to face the Arizona Cardinals on October 25th.  The Chiefs will host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, with Kansas City a +9 home underdog with the total set at 43.  They’ll play the Washington Redskins the following week before returning to Arrowhead Stadium to meet the San Diego Chargers on October 25th.
