PATRIOTS, BRADY HUMILATE TITANS
2009-10-19
The New England Patriots looked more like the unbeatable dynasty of a few years ago than a 4-2 team. Tom Brady looked not only like a MVP, but a hall of famer. And the Tennessee Titans looked like an overworked, disorganized team desperate to get to a bye week. Brady broke a NFL record with five touchdown passes in the second quarter, and tied his personal best with six for the game as the Pats utterly dominated the Titans 59-0 in a game that wasn’t even as close as that lopsided final score would suggest. The Pats improved to 4-2 while the hapless Titans slipped to 0-6.NFL betting enthusiasts who laid the -9’ points with New England as home favorites were toasting victory early as the Patriots had the number covered by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. New England improved to 3-3 against the NFL pointspread, while Tennessee dropped to 1-5 versus the number. The 59 points the Patriots dropped on the Titans went OVER the posted total of 38. Both teams evened their NFL totals record for the season at 3-3.
Afterwards, Brady was more interested in talking about his team’s overall performance than his personal success:
"Every week we're learning something more about ourselves and what we can do. There's no doubt a game like this can give you a lot of confidence."
Pats’ coach Bill Belichick was his typically low key self as he assessed the devastation wrought by his charges:
"You never go into a game thinking it's going to be like this. It's just our day today."
In the losing locker room, the tone was of a team that has hit rock bottom. Titans’ coach Jeff Fisher, a NFL head coach for fifteen seasons, said this was the worst game he’d ever been part of:
"I'm disappointed and embarrassed. Fortunately for me, career-wise, I have never been through anything like this before and, unfortunately, it happened tonight. I can assure you one thing, it's not going to happen again."
Still, he wasn’t overly critical of his players perhaps not wanting to ‘kick them while they were down’:
"I saw frustration, but not a lack of effort.”
The Titans’ players made similar comments. Tight end Bo Scaife noted:
"I don't think anybody in this league is 59 points better than us. This is the worst it gets."
Linebacker Keith Bulluck added:
"I've been playing sports since I was 8 and never have I experienced something like that."
The next team in the Patriots’ crosshairs is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who’ll host New England next Sunday. After that the Pats will get a week off before returning to action on November 8 at home against the Miami Dolphins. The Titans will lick their wounds over the bye week and have their first shot at redemption on November 1 as they host the Jacksonville Jaguars. They’ll head west to play at San Francisco the following Sunday.
