SAINTS THUMP BILLS WITH 4TH QUARTER SURGE

2009-10-01
TITANS WILL TRY TO TRADE VINCE YOUNG The Buffalo Bills did a commendable job shutting down the high powered offense of the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, holding Drew Brees to a season low 172 yards and no touchdown passes.  The problem was that the Saints did an even better job against the Buffalo offense, keeping Terrell Owens shut out completely.  ‘T.O.’ was held without a catch for the first time since his rookie year in 1996 as the Saints used a fourth quarter surge to defeat the Bills 27-7.  New Orleans improved to 3-0 with the victory while the Bills dropped to 1-2.

Despite the slow start, New Orleans eventually covered the -5’ pointspread with ease.  This improved their ATS record to a perfect 3-0, while Buffalo dropped their first decision of the year to the number.  The 34 points scored went UNDER the total of 51’.  Both teams played their first UNDER verdict of the NFL season after back to back OVER games to start the year.

Owens was fairly upbeat despite the bad day:

"I'm good. Just got to get ready for next week.”

While Bills’ head coach Dick Jauron said what he was probably thinking—that the team needs to throw the ball to him more often:

"We have to get him the football, obviously. Clearly he's a big part of the offense."

Saints’ QB Brees saw an NFL leading streak of 22 straight games of 200+ yards come to an end, but was pleased with the victory.  He praised the defense in his postgame comments to the media:

"Our defense played outstanding. Every time they stepped on the field, they just felt like the were going to shut them down."

Brees also suggested that fighting for the victory when he and the team had been taken out of ‘their’ game was a sign of an improving and maturing football team:

"This is a game that in the past would not have gone our way. It's the attitude. Once we got in the fourth quarter, offensively our attitude was every time we touch the ball we're getting points."

The Saints will now get a back to back dose of ‘The Big Apple’ coming to ‘The Big Easy’, as both New York teams will travel to New Orleans for successive games.  The Jets pay a visit this weekend, with the Saints a -7 home favorite and the total set at 45.  After a bye week, the Giants will head south for a game on October 18th.  New Orleans will then take to the road themselves, playing at Miami on October 25th.  Buffalo will play at the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, with Buffalo a -1 road favorite.  The total in the game has been posted at 37.  Buffalo will host the Cleveland Browns the following weekend before traveling to New York to face the Jets on October 18th.
