PACKERS USE 4TH QUARTER SURGE TO PUT AWAY COWBOYS

2009-11-19
TITANS WILL TRY TO TRADE VINCE YOUNG The Green Bay Packers’ defense finally stepped up on Sunday, forcing two fumbles and a Tony Romo interceptions in the process of completely shutting down the Dallas Cowboys to earn a 17-7 victory.  The Packers led 3-0 at halftime and stretched that lead to 17-0 late before a Cowboys’ touchdown in the final seconds of the game made the score somewhat respectable.  Green Bay snapped a three game losing streak and improved to 5-4, while Dallas had its four game winning streak stopped as they slipped to 6-3.

NFL football betting enthusiasts who took Green Bay as +3 home underdogs also benefited from the Packers’ outright win.  Both teams are now 5-4 against the NFL pointspread The 24 combined points went well UNDER the posted total of 48.  It was the fourth UNDER of the season against five OVER verdicts for both the Cowboys and the Packers.

It wasn’t a game for the ages by any stretch of the imagination, but Packers’ cornerback Charles Woodson praised his team’s passion:

"It seemed like guys had a lot of passion out there today for the game. Where it came from, I don't know, but we were happy to have it and got a big win for this team. We've got to have that passion every week, and it's got to show up on the field."

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t have a great game, but was heartened by the win which he suggested was a boost for a team that fans were beginning to give up on:

"I think a lot of people were thinking this was going to be the end of our road. I'm proud of the fact that when we needed a big drive in the third quarter, we came up with it"

The Green Bay defense gave Dallas QB Romo trouble all day, starting with a stifling pass rush that sacked him five times.  He commended the Packers’ defensive intensity after the game:

"Their defense is good, they've got a good scheme. I don't know how they are normally, but today they definitely got good pressure on the quarterback, slowed our running game and they played good behind it. The secondary, they've got good players."

Green Bay will host the San Francisco 49ers this weekend in another game that should focus on defense.  The Packers are -6’ point home favorites with the total set at 42.  They’ll then play the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day before hosting the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, December 7.  The Cowboys will face their hated rivals the Washington Redskins this Sunday.  Dallas is a -11 home favorite with the total set at 41’.  They’ll also be in action on Thanksgiving Day, hosting the Oakland Raiders before playing an away game against the New York Giants on December 6.
