YOUNG BACK AT QB AT TITANS TOP JAGS
2009-11-03
Chris Johnson rushed for a franchise record 228 yards and two touchdowns and Vince Young returned to the starting lineup and threw another touchdown as the Tennessee Titans won their first game of the season with a 30-13 verdict over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville’s Marcus Jones-Drew played well in a losing cause, rushing for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Tennessee is now 1-6 on the year while Jacksonville slumped to 3-4.The Titans covered a game against the NFL pointspread for only the second time this season with the win as -3 home favorites, breaking a five game ATS losing streak. Tennessee is now 2-5 against the spread while Jacksonville dropped to 4-3 against the number and failed to cover for the third straight game. The 43 combined points scored just managed to stay UNDER the posted total of 44. Both teams have gone OVER in four of their seven games this season.
Titans’ owner Bud Adams had made the call earlier in the week that Young would return to the starting lineup, and he was pleased with his decision and his quarterback’s performance:
"He looked all right out there. I think he's coming around a lot. I think there's some things that happened to him early in his career that didn't let him concentrate on football. I think he realized he needed to work at it hard. And he has shown that."
Jeff Fisher sounded more relieved than enthused with the victory:
"It's just one week at a time now we got the first win. Unfortunately, it took us a little bit too long. Now we're going to take it and just move on."
Jaguars’ head coach Jack Del Rio took the blame for the loss, but quarterback David Garrard disagreed:
"We appreciate Jack saying that, but we have to do better as players executing the game plan. Everybody has to get better, period.”
Jacksonville has a good shot to get back in the win column this Sunday as they host the lowly Kansas City Chiefs. The Jaguars are -6’ home favorites with the total set at 42. They’ll hit the road to face the New York Jets the following weekend before returning home to take on the Buffalo Bills on November 22. Tennessee will try to string together back to back wins as they travel cross country to take on the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday. The Titans are +4 road underdogs with the total set at 41. They’ll host Buffalo next weekend before playing at Houston the following Monday night.
