CHARGERS THROTTLE CHIEFS FOR SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN
2009-12-03
After a slow start to the season, the San Diego Chargers have turned things around in a big way. On Sunday, they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 43-14 to win their sixth straight game. Chargers’ quarterback Phillip Rivers threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns against no interceptions, while Kansas City’s Matt Cassel could only manage 178 yards with a touchdown and an interception. San Diego improved their record to 8-3 while Kansas City slumped to 3-8 on the year.NFL football betting fans that backed the Chargers as -13 home favorites easily cashed their tickets with the lopsided win. San Diego has covered four straight and five of six, improving their NFL pointspread record to 6-5 on the year. Kansas City’s loss ended a three game ATS winning streak, but they’ve performed well against the number of late covering 5 of their last 7 contests. For the year, they’re 5-6 ATS. The 57 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 44’. The Chargers have gone OVER in six of their eleven games this season (4 UN, 1 push) while the Chiefs have a NFL totals mark of 6-3-2.
San Diego’s Paul Oliver ran back a fumble return forty yards for a touchdown and commended his team’s performance on both sides of the ball:
"We put the offense in good field position and really helped them out every way we could. It was a close game for the first half, but then the turnovers took over and we capitalized on all of them.”
Added head coach Norv Turner:
"You create those plays with an attacking mentality.”
Chiefs’ head coach Todd Haley blamed turnovers for the blowout loss:
"If you turn the ball over it's going to get out of hand quick, which is exactly what happened.”
Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel concurred:
"You can't give a good team that's playing really well right now 28 points off turnovers.”
Chargers’ running back Ladanian Tomlinson suggested that his team could compete with anyone in the league at this point:
"I think we are a pretty good team. I think we can challenge any team and beat any team. I think it shows what kind of a team we really are when we come play like this against a team we are supposed to beat."
The Chargers will play another team that they’re “supposed to beat” this Sunday as they head to Cleveland to face the bumbling Browns. San Diego is a -13 road favorite with the total set at 43. They’ll play the Dallas Cowboys on the road the following Sunday before returning home to take on the Cincinnati Bengals on December 20. The Chiefs will play their next three games at home, beginning with a game against the Denver Broncos this Sunday. Kansas City is a +4 home underdog with the total set at 38. They’ll continue their home stand with games against the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns.
