JETS BEAT BILLS IN TORONTO
2009-12-07
The New York Jets used a solid defensive effort to beat the Buffalo Bills 19-13 on Thursday night in a game played at Toronto, Ontario’s Rogers Center Stadium. The Bills have agreed to play a number of preseason games and one regular season contest per year at the home of the CFL Toronto Argonauts, but didn’t give their adopted hometown fans much to cheer about here. The Jets’ defense held Buffalo to just 10 first downs and 197 yards of total offense as the Bills slipped to 4-8 on the NFL season. The Jets improved their record to 6-6.NFL pointspread players who backed the Jets as -3’ favorites were rewarded with the pointspread victory. Both teams are now 6-6 against the spread on the season. The 32 combined points scored went UNDER the posted total of 37. The Jets have gone UNDER in six of their 12 games this season (5 OV, 1 push) while the Bills have gone UNDER in seven of twelve games.
Though they won the game, the Jets may have lost starting quarterback Mark Sanchez for the rest of the season. He injured his knee on a headfirst dive, much to the irritation of his coach Rex Ryan who has been trying to teach him how to slide. After the game, Ryan explained his exasperation:
"He's got to understand that it's in the organization's best interests to slide, and that was disappointing. I love the kid, but he's got to grow up and understand that he represents our entire organization."
Buffalo was left to deal with a very disappointing loss. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick gave his take on the events of the game:
"They had our number today. Very disappointing. We had opportunities all day. Just real disappointed with what happened out there."
Interim head coach Perry Fewell added:
"We just didn't get it done, bottom line. But we had an opportunity to win the football game in the fourth quarter."
That chance went by the wayside when New York’s Darrelle Revis intercepted the ball to stop Buffalo’s final drive. He recalled what was an all-around big day for him:
"This is my first time going outside of the country. I got my passport for the first time. It was a good time."
The Jets will play on the road, though in the United States, next Sunday as they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They’ll host the Atlanta Falcons the following week before traveling to play the Indianapolis Colts on December 27. The Bills play their next game at Kansas City followed by a home game against the New England Patriots. They’ll play on the road against the Atlanta Falcons on December 27.
