JETS HANDLE TURNOVER PRONE PANTHERS

2009-12-02
TITANS WILL TRY TO TRADE VINCE YOUNG The New York Jets didn’t beat the Carolina Panthers as much as the Panthers beat themselves on Sunday.  Carolina threw four interceptions and posted a season low scoring output as the Jets prevailed at the Meadowlands 17-6.  Jake Delhomme suffered through one of his worst games of the season with only 130 yards and no touchdowns to go along with the four picks.  Carolina dropped to 4-7 while the Jets improved to 5-6.

The Jets also took the money against the NFL pointspread covering as -3 home favorites.  New York is 5-6 against the spread but covered for only the second time in their past eight games.  Carolina slipped to 4-7 against the number.  The 23 combined points scored went UNDER the posted total of 41.  The Jets have a NFL totals record of 5-5-1 while the Panthers have gone UNDER in six of their eleven games.

New York’s Darrelle Revis got the Jets’ scoring started in the first quarter with a 67 yard interception return for a touchdown.  After the game, he described the play:

"That was a sigh of relief. That was an easy score right there. It doesn't get any better than that to start us off."

Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez said that his team needed to forget about their recent run of bad play that saw the team win only two of their last eight games:

"We're rolling now and we can't think about a month ago. We've got to think about now. You see what happens when I play smart. I don't know how to explain it, but it works."

Sanchez left the game after falling awkwardly on his leg, but quickly returned:

"I guess it was just an awkward fall and he kind of landed on my leg. They checked out all the ligaments and stuff and it looks good."

Head coach Rex Ryan noted simply:

"This was a great win. It feels good to say that. It's been a while."

In the Panthers’ locker room, Carolina QB Delhomme had few answers for his team’s dismal performance:

"It wasn't good. There's no other way to put it. We didn't run it well. We certainly didn't throw it well."

The Jets now play two straight on the road starting Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills.  New York is a -3 favorite in that contest with the total set at 37.  They’ll return to action on Sunday, December 13 against Tampa Bay before returning home one week later to face the Atlanta Falcons.  The Panthers host the Bucs on Sunday, with Carolina a -6 home favorite and the total set at 41.  They’ll then travel to Foxboro, Massachusetts to play the New England Patriots the following Sunday before returning home on December 20 to play the Minnesota Vikings.
