BROCK LESNAR TO RETURN TO UFC COMPETITION THIS SPRING
2010-01-22
Brock Lesnar’s health issues have taken UFC fans on an emotional rollercoaster during the past few months. Initially diagnosed as a simple bout of the flu, Lesnar’s intestinal problems would snowball to threaten his career as a professional fighter. Earlier this week, however, there was a surprising announcement of very good news from the reigning UFC heavyweight champion: he’s been given a clean bill of health from his doctors and is hoping to make his return to action as soon as late May. The news was a best case scenario for both Lesnar and the UFC, who had braced for the possibility of major surgery and even an end to his career.Lesnar suffered from diverticulitis and diverticulosis which, essentially, produced a big hole in his intestines and caused him to lose 40 pounds. He’s since regained 30 pounds of the lost weight and is preparing to resume fight training. He credits a drastically overhauled diet with the miraculous turnaround in his physical condition and has admitted that had surgery been necessary he was very likely leaning toward retirement.
The most acute trouble began while Lesnar was on a hunting trip in Canada. At the time, the thinking was that he had been suffering from the flu or some sort of viral infection. He was rushed to a Canadian hospital after collapsing and not finding adequate medical care north of the border returned to the US. At a hospital in Bismarck, ND doctors delayed immediate surgery and were pleased to see signs of improvement. After a treatment with IV feeding and antibiotics, his condition began to improve even more significantly. Despite these improvements, a second opinion at the Mayo Clinic indicated that surgery was still a necessity.
Lesnar’s health continued to improve and he received a belated Christmas gift on a January 5th follow up visit to his doctors who told him “you just got a winning lottery ticket.” Lesnar’s intestinal infection had cleared up completely, and he was given the green light to resume training immediately and get back into the octagon.
The current working plan is for Lesnar to face the winner of the Frank Mir/Shane Carwin fight in late May. Originally, the Carwin/Mir tilt was to be for the ‘interim’ heavyweight title but with Lesnar’s condition improving so quickly that likely won’t be necessary. Should that fight not work out, Lesnar will likely face the winner of the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira/Cain Velasquez matchup. In any case, the UFC and MMA fans everywhere will be glad to see him back in action regardless of the opponent.
