FORMER NFL STAR HERSCHEL WALKER DRAWS GREG NAGY FOR MMA DEBUT

2010-01-25
WEC: HENDERSON DECISIONS CERRONE Former NFL star Herschel Walker will be making his professional MMA debut on the January 30 Strikeforce: Miami show, and now he knows the identity of his opponent.  Walker will face 26 year old Greg Nagy, who’ll enter the bout with a 1-1 professional record.  Nagy has a background in Muay Thai and lives and trains in Arizona.

Nagy realizes that he’s getting a big opportunity, not only to fight on a nationally televised show for a major promotion but in taking on a mainstream media superstar in Walker.  He said that he was initially in awe of the fact that he’d be taking on a NFL legend, but realized that he needs to focus on the fight and not the celebrity of his opponent:

"I'm very honored to be fighting Herschel Walker. I was awestruck. It took a few days to set in. 'I'm really fighting Herschel Walker?' ... But I knew I needed to focus on training, not necessarily fighting Herschel. I can't get overwhelmed by who he is. At the end of the day, it's just another opponent."

But Nagy realizes that it’s a huge opportunity to make a name for himself in the sport:

"I've had two pro MMA fights, and this is a major Strikeforce show airing nationally. It's just a great opportunity ... to happen so quickly for me."

Walker is a prohibitive MMA betting favorite, but Nagy is paying little attention to the odds:

"It's not my concern what Vegas or anyone else thinks going into my fight. I have the utmost confidence not only in myself but also my trainers and the guys getting me ready at the RITC Training Center."

Walker, meanwhile, is training with the American Kickboxing Academy in California to prepare for his MMA debut.  Despite the relatively advanced age of 47, Walker remains in insane physical condition and looks every bit like he could still play professional football.  He’s decided to try his hand at mixed martial arts for the challenge of it—in fact, he’s donating his entire fight purse to charity.
