BAYERN MUNICH SHOCKS MAN U IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLAY

BAYERN MUNICH SHOCKS MAN U IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLAY Manchester United scored just two minutes into their Champions League quarterfinal game with German side Bayern Munich, but were dominated the rest of the way.  Things really fell apart for the English Premier League leaders as the game drew to a close.  Munich tied the game at the 76 minute mark, and then nailed the winning goal in injury time as Man U’s superstar striker Wayne Rooney lay injured on the field.  The 2-1 victory gives Bayern Munich a margin for error as the series shifts to Old Trafford for the second leg next week.

Soccer betting enthusiasts who backed the home team experienced the full gamut of emotions as they saw their bet go from a loser to a winner in a matter of minutes.  Bayern Munich had been a +200 choice to win the game, with Manchester United priced at +150.  The draw was priced at +210.
The injury time goal also sent the game OVER the posted total of 2’.

The game couldn’t have started better for Manchester United, as Wayne Rooney gave them the lead just 64 seconds in.  Little did they know that would be the only real highlight for their side, and the home team dominated play the rest of the way.  Bayern would finish with a 20-9 shots advantage and a 60% to 40% time of possession edge.

Despite the one sided play, Man U continued to hold the lead late in the game until Franck Ribery evened the score at the 76 minute mark.  From that point, things really took a turn for the worst for the visitors.  With their offensive catalyst Rooney laying in his end with an injured foot, Ivica Olic gave Munich the improbable stoppage time victory.

Afterwards, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that his team was simply outplayed:

"We didn't play well enough to be honest. We kept giving the ball away. We caused our own defeat. Bayern were the better team. We can't complain about that, but we're better than that in possession. We kept giving it away and that was our downfall. The first goal was a bit of luck with a deflection but the last goal, I don't know how you describe it. The game was done and we gave a terrible goal away."

"Old Trafford will be a different game obviously. We will be much better, no doubt about that, and hopefully we can recover. We have the away goal and we'll go out to win the game."

A more immediate concern is the condition of Rooney.  His status is currently unknown pending further tests.  Manchester United has a big Premier League game against Chelsea this weekend before the return match against Bayern Munich on their home field next week.
