INTER MILAN CLINCH SERIE A TITLE
2010-05-17
Inter Milan experienced some anxious moments against relegation bound Siena on Sunday, but after a scoreless first half were able to secure victory by a 1-0 margin. Diego Milito’s goal at 57 minutes was the only score of the game but it was all Inter Milan needed. The win also gave them the Serie A title by 2 points over AS Roma, who also won on Sunday. Inter has now won five straight Scudetto titles and can win their third major championship of the year if they can defeat Bayern Munich in the Champions League finale. Soccer betting odds reflected not only Inter Milan’s dominance and superiority over lowly Siena, but also the importance of the victory—Inter was installed as a -900 away favorite, with takeback on Siena a whopping +1400. Despite losing the game outright, Sienna was a winning choice for goal handicap betting cashing tickets as a +2 -123 underdog. The single goal went UNDER the posted total of 2’.
Statistically, Internazionale dominated the contest, holding a lopsided 26-6 shots advantage and an overwhelming 73% to 27% possession advantage. The scoreboard told a different story, and nerves could have been a factor as Inter shot a number of balls wide or high of the net. After a scoreless first half, Diego Milito scored his 28th goal of the year with a nifty curling shot past Siena goaltender Gianluca Curci. After this score, Inter Milan played defensive football for the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
Inter Milan team manager Jose Mourinho celebrated the victory and looked ahead to the Champions League final:
"The best team has won the title. The tournament is made up of so many games and always the team that deserves it, wins. Although maybe it could have been easier."
"A historic week for Inter begins. The season is over and to have won the scudetto and the Coppa Italia is always fantastic, even Bayern Munich has done that. But only one team can win the Champions League. Right now I don't have the energy to go and watch a Bayern DVD but from tomorrow onwards it will be back to work."
The Champions League final is set for Saturday, May 22 in Madrid, Spain. Inter Milan is a +130 favorite to claim the crown, with takeback on Bayern Munich priced at +235.
