JETS PLAN FOR LIFE WITHOUT DARRELLE REVIS
2010-08-10
The New York Jets are taking a hard line with holdout All Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis. The team rejected a contract offer from Revis’ agent on Monday and is now planning for the NFL season under the assumption that he won’t be with the team. Revis is slated to make $1 million this season and while the Jets concur that he’s underpaid they’re not prepared to meet his demand that he become the highest paid cornerback in the NFL—a price tag that would exceed $15 million a year.Jets owner Woody Johnson spoke to the media and said that there’s been no progress toward an agreement:
"The answer is no. My impression is no progress ... no movement whatsoever."
When asked if Revis would play for the Jets this season:
"My gut feeling is, I would say no.”
Last week Revis’ agent Neil Schwartz claimed that the holdout was the final option to get the team to rework his deal:
"We were hoping Darrelle wouldn't have to go down this path. He and his family were extremely deliberate in this decision making process. Darrelle Revis' actions will speak louder than words. And his absence will be deafening."
Head coach Rex Ryan praised Revis’ talent but is disappointed that he’s not in camp:
"He's a great player, the best corner I've ever been around. So, certainly, I'm disappointed. I really thought, in my heart, he would be signed by now and we wouldn't be having these conversations."
Despite the loss of arguably the league’s best shutdown cornerback, Ryan is going about his business:
"We're going to prepare like he's not going to be here. If he comes through the door, that's fine. Somebody will kiss him on the lips, probably. It doesn't matter. We're getting this team ready. The guys that are here, we're getting ready."
Revis is looking for a deal in excess of $45 million which the current highest paid DB—Nnamdi Asomugha—signed last year. Revis reportedly rejected a pair of offers tendered by the team at the last minute, one short term deal and a long term package that would have made him "a Jet for life." The final offer from the team was in excess of $100 million, but contained only $5 million in guaranteed money for 2010.
