JETS REVIS INJURES HAMSTRING IN WIN OVER PATRIOTS
2010-09-20
Much of the pre-game hype surrounding the New York Jets’ home matchup against the New England Patriots centered on the head to head battle between Darrelle Revis and Randy Moss. Unfortunately, that battle never really materialized as Revis injured his hamstring late in the first half and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines. Revis will have an MRI early this week, but he says that it’s not a pull or tear based on how it feels. The Jets won the game 28-14.Revis left practice early on Thursday complaining of ‘tightness’ in his hamstring muscle which he attributed to the conditioning he missed during his training camp holdout:
"It could be a training camp thing because I wasn't there. I was working out -- I wasn't sitting down and being a couch potato -- but my teammates had a month of organized football, one-a-days and two-a-days of hard football. I'm still trying to get my football legs under me."
Jets’s coach Rex Ryan was taking the news hard as he confirmed that Revis had injured the same hamstring that had given him trouble earlier in the week:
"I believe that's right, but I'm not 100 percent. I think I was in tears when they told me he pulled a hamstring."
Revis injured his hamstring on a play where there appeared to be some confusion about the defensive coverage. He lost Randy Moss and tried to catch up to him, but to no avail. Moss made a one handed grab in the endzone for a Patriots’ touchdown. Ryan recalls the play:
"It's not a good thing when you're playing two different coverages. Anytime that happens, that's trouble, and those guys made us pay."
Revis said he knew there was a problem when his speed wouldn’t ‘kick in’:
"I didn't get the call at all to tell you the truth. It was two different calls at the end of the play that I heard, and I didn't get the call. That's still no excuse, we're taught to still cover your man if you don't get the call."
"I pulled up. Usually I rely on my speed ... but it wouldn't let me speed up to make a play."
Although the severity of the injury won’t be known until Revis’ MRI, coach Ryan is preparing for the worst but hoping for the best:
"We've just got to play. We will find out tomorrow. Hamstring injuries are so tough to come back from. I just hope it's not that bad."
NFL football betting enthusiasts who backed the Jets as +3 point home underdogs cashed their tickets with the outright New York victory. The 42 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 39.
