TOM BRADY TALKS TO MEDIA ABOUT BOSTON CAR ACCIDENT

2010-09-14
TITANS WILL TRY TO TRADE VINCE YOUNG It’s been an eventful week for New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady.  Within the past 7 days he led the Patriots to a win over Cincinnati in the NFL regular season opener, signed a contract that made him the highest paid player in the league and escaped without injury from a car accident in Boston’s Back Bay area.  On Monday, Brady talked about the accident with the media for the first time and expressed his gratitude for surviving the incident relatively unscathed.

Brady recalled the moments immediately after the accident, in which the quarterback reacted much the same way as anyone else would in the situation:

"I'm telling you, when it happened, I didn't even know what to do, because you're just in shock. I was kind of sitting there in the car, looking around, trying to get my bearings.”

"And then I got out of the car and I saw a woman and I said, 'Are you OK?' And she said, 'Yeah.' And she said, 'How are you?' I said, 'I'm fine." And I was just kind of looking around, I was looking in the other car to make sure they were OK.”

"The next thing, a guy says, 'Hey, do you want to call 911?' I said, 'God, that would be a good idea, wouldn't it?' So I did that. But I didn't even think about doing that. I was just thinking, 'How am I going to -- I've got to call [Bill] Belichick, I'm going to be late [for practice].' And then once I got home, then it really hits you."

Brady also talked about his concern for a bystander who was walking her dog near the accident scene.  She got a scare, but was uninjured:

"I thought we hit her. I swear to God. It was like 'The Matrix.' When the cars hit, I saw all the glass kind of explode. Then I saw her go flying. I thought, 'Oh, my God' as we're kind of skidding to a stop. I saw her go flying back."

"My hands were at 10 and 2, I mean, I was doing everything right. I can't always say that. Sometimes, the way I drive is a bit more dangerous. It was one of those fluky things."

Brady said that he appreciated being able to go home to his wife and son after the near miss:

"I was excited that I was able to come home and see my family ... that felt good. I got in a crash, I came home and I said, 'God I'm just fortunate to be able to be here with my son and my wife.' That's really a blessing."

Brady was fortunately wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, and that likely prevented serious injury (the $80,000 state of the art Audi sedan he was driving probably didn’t hurt either).  He concluded his comments by stressing the importance of wearing a seat belt:

"Man, wear your seat belts. That's all I can tell everybody. You never know."

Brady showed no ill effects of the crash in the Patriots’ 38-24 season opening win over the Cincinnati Bengals.  New England will try to move to 2-0 this week as they travel to the Meadowlands to take on the New York Jets.  There’s currently no NFL betting line on the game due to the Jets playing on Monday night.
