Baseball has been played at US college since the mid-1800s. The first recorded intercollege baseball games was contested in Amherst, Massachusetts on July 1, 1859 between teams from Amherst and Williams Colleges. It became ubiquitious at American colleges and universities during the early part of the Twentieth Century, but has experienced tremendous growth since the 1980's. The growth in MLB salaries has attracted a better level of athlete to the college game, but much of the surge in popularity is due to the high profile media exposure given to the annual College World Series. The College Baseball season runs from late February to early May, followed by the College World Series.
